A creative and visual way to show the evolution of the web to these days.

I had to uncheck Use the visual editor when writing in my profile in order to get this YouTube video here !!

Testing Windows Live Writer

Yes. Navigating from blogroll to blogroll, I found this app that allows me to write and publish to my WordPress blog.

I never used anything like this before, that is because I never had any luck setting up a conection from any application with my blogs. There was always something in between, so I didn’t trust them much, and used the standard APIs to write my posts.

What you see here, is an image of the interface. You can tell it’s very similar to Microsoft Office 2003.

I haven’t tried all of the options it has, but these are the first impressions…

A few things I noticed that don’t convince me:

  1. The Insert Picture button prompts me to select an image from my local drive. The only way to insert an image that is hosted in my webspace is through the menu Insert > Insert Picture From Web. Apparently it does not have image publishing support for WordPress blogs, I don’t know about other blogging services, I should try with my blogger account.
  2. I can’t add new categories. But I can choose in which category/categories I want to post through a dropdown list at the top of the sidebar.
  3. After I published, it seems the post remained as a draft… funny. And it didn’t display in the archives for Feb 25. I had to publish from WP’s API to get it online. I should try publishing directly to see what happens then…

Nice features I found:

  1. I can add tags. There are several tag providers to choose from, plus the possibility to add custom providers.
  2. It has several views. Normal -only text and images on a white background, Web Layout -where you write the post using the CSS style from your blog (colours, fonts, etc.), Web Preview -just to see a preview of the post in the blog, it doesn’t allow editing, and HTML Code -no need to explain that one!.
  3. Draft posting. You can post to your blog as a draft, or you can go ahead and publish directly. I’ve been saving this post as a draft to my blog. And when I go to see what it has saved, I noticed the text in this numbered list is justified. I can’t remember if the WP API does the same thing. Another one to test. :-)
  4. Trackbacks.
  5. It can retrieve my posts from the blog, allowing me to edit them.

I can’t continue my list, because it basically has a lot of similarities with TinyMCE, though it’s not as customizable. I think I’ll keep on testing for a while longer to make up my mind. If I find anything interesting, I’ll come back to update.

For now, let’s see what happens when I push the Publish button… ;-)

Getting used to WordPress

8 febrero, 2007

So this is it. I finally got my WP blog working pretty much like I want it to.

Still there are some things that I need to investigate, and personalize. I did think of designing my own theme for the blog, but after much procastinating and theme searching for inspiration I found this one: Redoable. It has nice colours -a similar palette to the one I intended to use- and a practical navigation. I believe it’ll do for now, until I find the time and creativity to build something of mine!

Now that I come to think of it, it’s been quite some time since I last blogged in English. My lasts posts where in the now extinct Modblog.com community. I hope to write here as often as I can, and keep my penpal’s abroad up-to-date.

You can check out my actual blog spot (in Spanish) at: Pipoenlaweb.com.ar

I’m still putting this place together, so sorry for the mess!

Con que esto fue…

8 septiembre, 2006

“¿Te enteraste?”, me preguntó.

Qué cosa rara no?
